The 7th International Symposium on RNA Viruses

The 7th International Symposium on RNA Viruses

Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections - Liang Li Jun
Guided by Prof. Shin-Ru Shih

After organizing the 6th International Symposium on RNA Viruses, the Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections once again hosted the 7th International Symposium on RNA Viruses this year with the theme of “Virus and Host Interaction”. The symposium attracted approximately 300 scholars and researchers from relevant fields. Domestic participating institutions include Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, National Health Research Institutes, Taipei Medical University, National Taiwan University, National Yang Ming University, National Tsinghua University, and Chang Gung University. Overseas participants included representatives from University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, University of Texas and University of Washington. The number of attending participants has exceeded the last symposium held.

A total of twelve internationally-acclaimed scholars were invited as the symposium speakers, two of whom from abroad with the remaining being our domestic scholars. The diversity of topics presented managed to keep this symposium lively and interesting. Throughout this two-day event, the participants were actively engaged in the Q & A session. Further discussion on the theme of this symposium was carried out in view of their enthusiasm. All of the participants benefited from this experience as they have broadened their knowledge and widened their horizons. The Q & A session also facilitated the exchange of ideas and views between the participants and international as well as local scholars.

Hosting an international symposium is the best way for domestic colleges and universities to align themselves with international standards. Since the establishment of the Research Centre for Emerging Viral Infections, seven international symposiums on RNA Viruses have been organized with great success. Apart from the full support of our university, another contributing factor that has led to such a success is our reputation. Our professors have outstanding research results that are on a par with the world’s renowned scholars. This symposium provides a platform for interaction among scholars from different parts of the world and sparks international competition in a positive way. Our invited speakers include Prof. Shin-Ru Shih, director of Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections, who spoke about virus-host interaction, Prof. Jim-Tong Horng, director of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, who addressed the impact of antiviral agents on the life history of enterovirus, and Associate Prof. Rei-Lin Kuo from the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Science, who presented on the regulation of the host’s physiological mechanism by NS1 protein of influenza A virus. We hope that this symposium would be able to promote international co-operation in the field of RNA virus-related research for the sake of global scientific advancement.
