Chang Gung University Cooperates with National Applied Research Laboratories and Singapore University of Technology and Design to Jointly Establish the International Master’s Program in Nano-Electronic Engineering and Design

Department of Electronic Engineering

In order to increase international academic exchange as well as to support the government’s New Southbound Policy, Chang Gung University collaborated with the Singapore Institute of Technology and Design (SUTD) to jointly establish the International Master’s Program in Nano-Electronic Engineering and Design and signed a memorandum of cooperation with the National Chip Implementation Center and the National Nano Device Laboratories of the National Applied Research Laboratories for the international program,  SUTD is the fourth public university established collectively by the Ministry of Education of Singapore and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is also one of the first universities in the world to integrate the elements of technology, entrepreneurship, management, and design conception to cultivate technology-based leaders and innovators.

The International Master’s Program in Nano-Electronic Engineering and Design focuses on nano-component manufacturing, nano-circuit design and reliability installation. This master’s program will liaise with multinational corporations in Singapore on numerous projects, and teachers will be provided the College of Engineering led by Chair Prof. Bing-Jian Sheu and Prof. Cher-Ming Tan. Chair Prof. Bing-Jian Sheu is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and was formerly a professor at the University of Southern California and a director of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. At present, the integrated circuit (IC) chip design industry in the world follows the component model researched and developed by Professor Sheu. Prof. Cher-Ming Tan is an internationally renowned reliability scholar, and he is appointed by Chang Gung University to establish a reliability research center.

The dual degree arrangement is made for this program.  Students will be recruited by Chang Gung University and SUTD respectively.  All students will attend courses and practical training sessions in Chang Gung University for nine months. The National Chip Implementation Center and the National Nano Device Laboratories of the National Applied Research Laboratories will supply teachers and facilities to facilitate some courses and practical training.  Then students will continue to study in SUTD for nine months to conduct research and write up theses.  This program takes eighteen months to complete.

The ceremony for signing the cooperation memorandum between Chang Gung University and the National Chip Implementation Center and the National Nano Device Laboratories of the National Applied Research Laboratories was held on February 26 at the Shengeng Lecture Hall in the College of Management of Chang Gung University.  President of Chang Gung University Prof. Chia-Chu Pao was present to deliver the greeting speech. Vice president of SUTD Prof. Sheng-Jie Yang and Director of the National Chip Implementation Center and the National Nano Device Laboratories of the National Applied Research Laboratories Prof. Wen-Kuan Yeh also delivered speeches. On behalf of Chang Gung University, the Dean of the College of Engineering Prof. Chao-Sung Lai signed a memorandum of cooperation with Director Wen-Kuan Yeh.  Professors from Chang Gung University and SUTD also conducted talks through online video conference to establish a close connection for cooperation between the two sides.
