In response to the aging population, the government has been vigorously promoting biomedical-related industries in recent years. Biomedical engineering technology is closely related to the improvement of medical services industry and quality of health care. It also has been listed as one of the twelve key technologies in the country. To meet the educational objectives of combining theory and practice, the College of Engineering of Chang Gung University actively promotes biomedical-engineering-related education and research in line with the clinical needs of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. In 1996, the interdepartmental Biomedical Engineering Research Center was established. On the 10th floor of the Engineering Building, a joint research laboratory for biomedical engineering research was established, covering an area of 436 square meters. The research focuses on “Biomedical Sensing and Biomedical Microchannels”, “Molecular and Functional Imaging”, and “Tissue Engineering and Nanomedicine”, etc. A total of 34 full-time teachers and 20 physicians from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital have joined. In the past five years, the team published 307 journal articles, obtained 43 patents and completed 5 technology transfers, demonstrating research outcomes of cross-departmental and cross-disciplinary teamwork. In recent years, the research center has achieved marvellous results in medical equipment development, rehabilitation and technical aids, ultrasonic therapy technology, wearable smart medical health device, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, biomedical micro-electro-mechanical system, nanomedicine and other aspects. In 2018, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy announced that the College of Engineering of Chang Gung University was ranked among the world top 100 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities for its research results in the biomedical engineering field.

In recent years, two technologies developed by the research center have received the National New Innovation Award and the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Future Science Breakthrough Award. These two technologies are the “Non-invasive Ultrasound Drug Delivery to the Brain Technology” and the “Wearable Seismocardiogram Monitoring for Cardiac Early Warning System”. The first technology can temporarily open up the blood-brain barrier and allow the passage of therapeutic drugs for the brain, with an efficacy of up to 60 times. Animal experiments have proven that the effects of treating brain tumors and Parkinson’s disease have improved significantly. This technology has been widely reported by international media and has been recognized as one of the five key ultrasonic technologies that may change human life. It has been successfully transferred to an innovative company “NaviFUS Co., Ltd.” and received a start-up investment of 330 million dollars. The second technology can instantly measure the seismocardiogram (heart beat mechanical response) and electrocardiogram (cardiac electrophysiological response) to determine the weakness of heart beat, blood pumping deficiency, and characteristics of acute heart disease. It can also solve a bottleneck problem of ECG – ECG alone cannot distinguish heart failure from valvular heart disease. This system can be used at home, and it can detect the early signs before the onset of diseases, giving people an early warning in the first place. It is the original idea of synchronous monitoring of cardiac electromechanical signals, and it is also the realization of wearable health warning products. After reviewed by UK Impact research, this technology is believed to have potential to impact global health care.

In recent years, the results of biomedical engineering research by the College of Engineering of Chang Gung University have been recognized by numerous foreign universities, such as Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, the University of Melbourne in Australia, Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, and Tsinghua University in China. These universities have signed memoranda of cooperation for academic and research with us. In addition, we have also jointly implemented a number of international cooperation projects.
