The Handover Ceremony of the 9th President of Chang Gung University

Secretariat Office

On the afternoon of August 31st, Chang Gung University held a handover ceremony for the new president with the supervision of Zhen-Qing Huang, the representative of the Board of Directors. Professor Ming-Je Tang, a tenured professor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the former vice president of finance at National Taiwan University, took over the official seal from President Jia-Ju Bao and became the 9th president of Chang Gung University. He will uphold the concept of the two founders – “We want nothing but the best in education” to lead the team to move forward among the top universities.  He will continue to create a new era of higher education.

The handover ceremony was joined by several distinguished guests, including Director Rui-Yu Wang, Director Zhen-Qing Huang, General Manager Shan-Zhi Lin, Vice President Jun-Kan Chen, Vice President Kuang-Hung Hsu and the top management of the University. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Director Rui-Yu Wang handed in the letter of appointment to the 9th president and delivered a speech, saying that the achievements of Chang Gung University have been well recognized, ranked first for teaching and research among all private universities nationwide.  All these could be attributed to the dedicated efforts of President Jia-Ju Bao and Vice President Jun-Kan Chen.  Both of them were recruited over 30 years ago by the school founders from overseas to build Chang Gung University from scratch, and now it has become a top-notch research university.

Director Rui-Yu Wang also praised President Bao for putting effort into leading the molecular medical research team, and closely interacting with Nobel Laureate Professor Hartwell to create a world-class biomarker research environment.  In 2016, the research team managed to develop a non-invasive biomarker group to precisely detect the risk of oral cancer through the saliva sample. This technology, which is valuable to society, has completed the technology transfer and obtained a license.

Director Rui-Yu Wang mentioned that it’s a great honor for Chang Gung University to hire Professor Ming-Je Tang, former vice president of finance of National Taiwan University, as the new president of Chang Gung University. He is the first Ph.D. in strategic management from the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He taught at the University of Illinois of the United States and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After he returned to Taiwan, he served as the head of the Department of Industrial Management at Chang Gung University, and then taught in the Department of International Business at National Taiwan University.

President Tang is well-versed in teaching, research and school management with more than 20 years of experience. His performance in various facets is also very prominent. He is very good at using the teaching methods of top foreign universities to guide students, and has accordingly been elected as an outstanding teacher of the University of Illinois twice.  This honor is rarely awarded to Chinese teachers.  On top of that, he has also been awarded as an outstanding teacher by National Taiwan University for five times.  In terms of research, he also won research awards for five consecutive years from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

During his tenure as a superintendent of school affairs administration, President Tang was an innovative leader who fully demonstrated his management expertise. He served as the dean of the School of Professional Education and Continuing Studies and vice president of finance at National Taiwan University. After teaching at National Taiwan University in 1997, he created the EMBA program, strengthened the cooperation with the industry, began to expand the number of visits to Taiwan by inviting international students, and significantly increased the number of international student exchanges. He also set up the National Taiwan University Sustainable Fund, stabilized financial resources, established the self-financing income and profit center system in administrative offices, and greatly improved administrative efficiency.

President Tang is very active in the academic field as well as in the industry. He always comes up with endless creative ideas which successfully attract external attention.  As a result, many entrepreneurs see the opportunity in National Taiwan University and are willing to fund National Taiwan University.  For example, he facilitated the donation of NTD$75 billion dollars from Mr. Terry Guo to the National Taiwan University Cancer Center and established long-term cooperation with MediaTek Inc. and Fubon Financial Holding Co. Thus, where there's a will, there's a way.

In light of the sub-replacement fertility, Director Rui-Yu Wang expected that the university should be more proactive and innovative. All colleagues will need to work together to demonstrate their motivation, enthusiasm and social influence for the branding and features of Chang Gung University. The Board of Directors hopes to take advantage of President Tang's expertise in all-round professional management of school affairs and his innovative international outlook, so the world can see Chang Gung University.  We look forward to seeing Chang Gung University become a world-class university and contribute to the society, so as to live up to the original intention of the founders.

In his speech, President Tang said that being the new president meant a big responsibility.  He appreciated that President Bao left a wonderful talented team and a solid foundation.  Running a school is a social responsibility. In order to make a breakthrough, firstly we will need to go digital.  The future AI technology and computer development will make a major impact on society.  The school must take the initiative to position itself well to welcome this digital wave.  The first step is to establish a new digital college to support the research work of the College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, and the College of Management. Next, to internationalize the school, we should encourage students to use English to tap into the international community. He hopes all the colleagues can work with him, make good use of the generous resources offered by the Board of Directors, break through the old thoughts about private universities, and lead Chang Gung University to another peak.
