The “Life Education Featured Schools in 2021” award list was recently announced. A total of 8 schools stood out and were selected as life education featured schools this year, including Chang Gung University.

Mr. Yung-Ching Wang, the founder of Chang Gung University, founded Chang Gung Medical College in April 1987 (later renamed as Chang Gung University). The motto of Chang Gung University is “Diligence, Perseverance, Frugality and Trustworthy“, which aim to inspire and motivate all teachers and students of the school. Diligence means, in addition to reminding students to do things seriously, correctly and effectively, hoping students can learn some useful knowledge and experience in university, and thus have the ability to help others. A frugal and trustworthy life will not make people pursuing material enjoyment blindly; instead they will more focus on their own goals. The educational purpose of Chang Gung University is not only to nurture students to become talents with professional knowledge and practical experience, but also to focus on the cultivation of their personality and humanity.

Because of this, Chang Gung University not only integrates life education into the curriculum design, but also displays different features in the activities organized by student clubs inside and outside of the school:

(1) To provide diversified life education courses to immerse the campus with the concept of life education and then promote it.

Each semester the university offers courses such as: “Crisis Adjustment Theory and Practice”, “Introduction to Life Ethics Theories”, "Life Education Counselling for Children", "Life Medical History: The Study of Literati and Chinese Culture", "Introduction to Life Science Research", "Life Ethics", "Discussion on the Life Medical History", "Life and Death", "Natural Ecological Literature", and so on. More than one thousand students have enrolled in these courses.

(2)  To establish a service-learning center to implement life education on campus and in the community.

Adhering to the educational concept of "people-oriented and applying study to practice", Chang Gung University sets up a service-learning center in 2007, hoping to help students understand the relationship between giving and receiving through service activities. It is hoped that students could learn the correct attitude through the hand-on experience as well as strengthen the ability of self-reflection. On average, there are approximately 20 service teams in winter vacation and summer vacation each year. Prior to students’ graduation, the university will also issue a personal "Holistic Education Passport" to show each student’s learning achievements in the school's service learning and arts and humanities courses or activities on a radar map.

(3) To encourage student associations and clubs to organize activities regarding rural education, environmental conservation and humanity care.

At present, the relevant associations and clubs in the school are: Chong-De Youth Club (education of reading classics), Wisteria Goodwill Society (etiquette education), Light & Salt (hospital visit), Spring Shine Society (anti-five poison education), Chang Gung University Dogs Club (dog care), Tzu Chi Collegiate Association (auxiliary classes for disadvantaged students), Dandelion Task Force (children's education), Lokahda Medical Task Force (community health education) and other associations and clubs. More than 30 off-campus services are provided each year.

(4) With the themes of "to self", "to other people", "to the environment" and other aspects, we plan lectures and life education experience activities on campus and off campus every academic year.

In addition to organizing on-campus forums, Chang Gung University also leads students to participate in a number of beach cleaning activities, hospital services and homecoming services. On the eve of the Qingming Festival every year, we jointly organize the "Remembrance Ceremony for Organ and Cadaver Donors" with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Prior to the ceremony, Chang Gung University’s teachers and students fold the origami cranes and write memorial cards to remember the selfless spirit of donors, and to offer the deepest respect to the family. Looking at the decoration of thousands of paper cranes flying with the wind on the site every year, we wish to convey the thoughts of each participant, and also wish the recipients to be reborn out of great love. We pray that they could continue the beauty of life and start a new life. Some family members even sent a message to express their gratitude to the school and asked the school for a few paper cranes, hoping to bring the good will of the teachers and students of Chang Gung University to the spirit of their loved ones.

President Ming-Ze Tang of Chang Gung University said that education is not only for giving advanced professional knowledge, but also for the cultivation of personality. We will continue to devote ourselves to the practice of holistic education to achieve the goal of life education. Thank you for your affirmation to Chang Gung University. I will share this joy with the teachers and students of the university and will lead all to continue to work hard and move forward.
