To promise and implement the University’s sustainable development, as well as to be committed to social responsibilities, our school joined hands with Chang Gung University of Science and Technology and Ming Chi University of Technology, along with Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, jointly signed the University Sustainable Development Proposal on September 27th. President Ming-Je Tang of Chang Gung University led the first-level supervisors of the school to attend the ceremony. CGU has been promoting cross-departmental and cross-generational cooperation between teachers and students. The goal is to work together for the University’s sustainable development.

The ceremony was held at Chang Gung University of Science and Technology. President Ming-Je Tang of CGU, President Ying-Tung Lau of Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, President Thu-Hua Liu of Ming Chi University of Technology, and Chairman Eugene Chien jointly signed the proposal. In his speech, President Ming-Je Tang mentioned that times have changed. He stated that Environment, Social Responsibilities, and Corporate Governance (ESG) have long-term impacts on a business’s image, particularly on investment and various evaluations. In the future, ESG will be a continuous movement, starting with university education by training students to implement different ways of energy conservation and the development of a true ESG profession.

After the meeting, Chairman Eugene Chien gave a speech titled “The Challenges and Opportunities of University Sustainable Development”. He mentioned how climate change has had a comprehensive impact on universities, society, and industries. He also said that the demand for related talents would increase. Facing this trend, Chang Gung University has incorporated the concept of sustainability into the school development plans, from the improvement in talent training, expanded application of teachers’ research and development results, to the elevation of graduates' and alumni’s development. All of these have been continuously reviewed and refined, and have also gained acknowledgement from the general public.

To this end, Chang Gung University has established a special department called the Sustainable Development Office. Chief Sustainable Development Officer Kun-Mu Lee stated that in the future, the University aims to work on issues such as a green campus, green technology development, and sustainable development stakeholders. The University will also strengthen the connection between research and off-campus resources, to implement University Social Responsibility (USR) and University Sustainable Development. Standing at the peak of world trends with renewable energy, Chang Gung University has completed the first phase of solar power construction, with the second phase under planning. In the future, it shall provide the school with approximately 15% of green power.

On the other hand, the USR team of Chang Gung University will continue its work in the indigenous village of the Fuhsing District and help the development of the Guishan District. The university gives back to society by providing healthcare to the elderly and young children, the two major groups of society that have high demands for medical support. As for minorities, support is given by building a supportive working environment as well as appointing teachers and students to help the autistic and people with psychological disorders, so they can be integrated smoothly into society. With regards to the development of local culture and industry, the Yuan-Zhu Team (the Original Bamboo Team) utilizes local Makino bamboo to develop innovative Atayal cultural products, promote local creation, and expand aboriginal culture. When it comes to areas around the campus, the Humanity and Ecology Team uses rice produced in the Guishan District to brew Japanese Sake. With the assistance of brewing companies, we add value and sustainable management to rice production.

Chang Gung University puts words into action by fully promoting sustainable development. The university is no longer just an ivory tower for passing on knowledge, but an institution that is capable of connecting, discovering and solving problems for local areas.
